The Inner Voice of Love: A Journey Through Anguish to Freedom is a collection of passages from Henri Nouwen's journals, written during a period when his self-esteem evaporated, his energy to work disappeared, and God seemed entirely unreal. This is not a book to be read straight through: each short chapter takes time to digest, because, like the following passage, each of Nouwen's thoughts has the raw complexity of real honesty.

How to fall in love?

I came across a blog posting by Mario Torre How to fall in love... where he linked to an image of a beautiful young lady. Yup, as a red-blooded male she sure catches my attention.

But it occurred to me ... is that Love? Okay, lust, love, but what I really mean is this question: With whom is your primary relationship?

On leg pain and self love

My leg pain and a healer is an interesting read about someone exploring the relative value of "normal medicine" (going to a doctor for pills or surgery etc) and seeing a spiritual healer. It was written by someone experiencing leg pain which worried him considerably. Thinking of mechanical causes he thought about poor circulation in his legs, and scheduled an appointment with a circulation specialist.

The Inner Relationship

I, like many, grew up with voices and behaviors that have me treating myself very badly. This is, it seems, a universal pattern, that all people have inner critics and other kinds of voices inside themselves which actively interfere with their lives. This is the shadow self, the dark side, negative self images, etc. A lot of pain arises from this side of us.

To some degree Inner Homeopathy is about encouraging yourself to have a better relation with yourself. Inner Homeopathy asks you to embrace the painfilled parts of yourself with divine presence or love. Is that not the essence of creating a better relationship with yourself?

Finding your heart and loving yourself

One day leafing through Prayer and the Five Stages of Healing I came across a section about meditating on love. It's towards the end of chapter nine, and Ron Roth discusses Hilda Charlton's experience with meditating on love. After several months of an exercise her teacher gave her, she had this sudden awakening to love. Reading this a light popped inside me and I wanted to experiment with this exercise myself.

This exercise is very much related to the Inner Homeopathy concept. But let's first discuss the exercise itself.
